Private owner coal and coke wagons were by far the most numerous sights on railways pre 1939. Over 600,000 were in use, most being to Railway Clearing House (R.C.H.) common design. They came in a multitude of colours and logos representing their owner's company colours or that of the mine or gas works that owned them.
WWII saw them swept into Government common ownership.
Those that needed maintenance were turned out in the standard grey of unfitted stock, many soldiered on with peeling, fading paint well into the late 1950's and could be seen on remote branches and sidings often as storage units for various minerals.
All these wagons have spring buffers and sprung 3 link couplings.
